poker in the movies

Poker has made several cameo appearances in films in recent years, and is almost always used to denote the group of people playing to be roguish, cool or shady and often dangerous too. www.pokerstars.com
Poker movies perhaps this in itself is an accurate reflection of the average persons views of poker movies and serves to add that underlying feeling to a character from the audiences point of view. If you consider that poker playing often only takes up a small scene in poker movies, it would certainly seem to be the case that its function is to imbue the character with those connotations and alter the way the character is perceived by the audience.
It isn’t always the case that poker only plays a superficial part within film however, in terms of recent poker movies, ‘Casino Royale’ involved the very popular ‘Texas Holdem’ type of poker heavily in the storyline of the film. The movie also included some excellent poker playing scenes which is not always the case with poker movies. In some ‘wild west’ films in particular, the game is depicted as one where certain cliches in the game are exaggerated and people are always cheating each other, often resulting in a gunfight or something similar.
In general terms though I feel the modern poker movies such as ’Oceans 11’ and ’Casino Royale’ are beginning to include poker in such a way as to greater reflect the outside world’s shift in attitude towards poker as a more sophisticated, skilled game and test of yourself, although still retaining it’s roguish allure.
This, you would have to agree is a great advertisement for the game, and a very good way to help along your average persons curiosity on the subject and thus gain a greater following for the game of poker through what they learn and admire in poker movies. www.pokerstars.com
